Lomography

Lomography is the art of making pictures using film and ‘toy’ cameras. Toy cameras are inexpensive, mass-produced film cameras, usually made with plastic parts and lenses. Originally costing a few dollars in the 1970’s and 1980’s, they are the original disposable camera and are known for light leaks, limited center-focus and blurry edges. Capturing images using toy cameras is an adventure in patience and observation. The cameras have limited settings for light, focus and picture depth but the viewfinder has no connection to these settings. It only registers an approximation of the composition but allows for double or triple exposures. The photographer has to manipulate the camera settings based on film type and light, than position the subject at a specific distance before opening the aperture.

The process of taking the picture and the surprise of the image are the rewards. I have no idea what I have captured until the film is developed and a print made. Just as important as what shows on the print though, is the action of ‘taking the picture’. I’m forced to slow down, to think about the potential of each image, to determine how to capture the scene. I must set the simplistic buttons, move my body to the correct distance from the subject and advance the film by a hand crank.

It’s almost an exercise in meditation but with a community. Most times, when I’m out taking pictures, someone will ask about the ‘toy’ camera and the conversation will bloom from there. In the end, the printed image becomes a precious talisman to that time and place.
